I was considering posting a faux Japanese picture by Georges Barbier so I've been thinking about the "acceptable faces" of Orientalism etc.
Barbier admired Japanese art, Gauguin admired beautiful Tahitians, and that admiration shines through at a fundamental level underlying all the European intellectual and social crap which was shovelled on top. Good artists are capable of believing bizarre shit and behaving in anti-social ways.
I've been putting together my announcement for the POC in SF Carnival #9 and I think it'd be perfect. Because, well, there are lies and there are impressions, but I think I like Gauguin because of the beautiful Tahitians. Or the Tahitians he was able to see as beautiful who are beautiful to me in ways that remind me of how the women of my family and nation are beautiful. :)
Good artists =/= people. Particularly the Europeans. I was staggered when I found out about Asian stereotypes of artist-gentlemen. That rocked me off my feet. For a man to be learned, a painter/novelist and a pillar of society? Oh wow.
I know you're up to your tits in work and lifework...but, think you've got a post on that for the 9th Carnival for POC in SF? I think you might be dealing with what I'm looking to explore.
Hmm... about the colonialism in it? Tell me more, because I just wrote a 5-page paper about Modigliani and African art, so if I can use that, I'm totes in.
Your paper as is, with pics/scans of Modigliani's work, would be fantastic. But if you could find a way to write about that in the context of you as a woman who is feminine and of color and into beauty and frippery and your culture? That would be even more so. Especially if it was more about you as you, and a latina/indigene and how you saw the people Modigliani depicted.
Oh now THAT I can do. When is your deadline, btw? I suppose that will make a huge difference. If it's within the week, then I don't think I could work on it, but I could submit it as-is. If it's within 2 weeks, I might be able to work something out.
Oh, could you email me the details, pretty please? Any info you have on what the scope is, when, where posted, etc. I've been horribly out of the loop!

All that considered, that is still really a beautiful painting.
